How can you tell if there are vitamin E, D and manganese, zinc and iodine deficiencies?
If vitamin E deficiency: reproduction failure, degeneration of the retina, muscle weakness, pansteatitis in cats (discoloration of adipose tissue). Vitamin E plays a crucial role in protecting cells against the effect of free radicals and strengthening the immune system.
Vitamin D plays an essential role in the metabolism of Calcium and Phosphorus. If vitamin D deficiency: this can lead to weight loss, osteomalacia (pain in muscles, joints and bone fracture), secondary nutritional hyperparathyroidism. It is good to know that dogs do not have the capacity to synthesize vitamin D from the sun like other mammals do, the dog must necessarily obtain it in his diet.
Zinc: Essential for healthy skin and coat. If zinc deficiency, there may be skin damage, weakened growth and reproductive failure.
Manganese: If manganese deficient, it can create reproductive failure and stunted growth. In adults this causes lameness, joint enlargement and problem locomotion. On the other hand, this has not been documented in dogs but in other mammals. Manganese is important in activating cellular enzymes for nutrient metabolism at the cellular level.
Iodine is an essential component of the thyroid gland. If there is a deficiency it leads to goiter (swelling of the thyroid gland), dry coat, and weight gain (due to poor functioning of the thyroid gland). On the other hand, this is very little documented in dogs
